From September 6 to 9, 2022, approximately 350 delegates (290 in-person and 60 remote) from 41 countries and five continents attended the IUFRO All-Division 7 Conference in Lisbon, Portugal. This meeting was the first joint meeting of the Pathology and Entomology Research Groups since the All-Division 7 sessions at the IUFRO 125th Anniversary Congress in Freiburg in 2017. The conference was kindly hosted by the University of Lisbon and supported by WSL, FABI, The Navigator Company and Pensoft.

Four invited plenary speakers shared their research: 

• Maria Rosa Paiva spoke "On the long-distance train to Green Deal – next stop: Insect Semiochemicals".
• Peter Biedermann described "The role of fungi in shaping the ecology and behavior of bark and ambrosia beetles".
• Ana Perez-Sierra outlined the "Preparedness and response to introduced tree pests and pathogens in Britain".
• Mike Wingfield presented "Global tree health in the future: A world of challenges and opportunities".

In addition to the plenary presentations, a total of 26 sessions were held, 224 oral presentations were contributed, and 98 poster presentations were displayed across two poster sessions. The meeting included in-conference field tours to various places in the Lisbon area to observe forest health issues.

At the conference banquet, the following Division 7 awards were presented:
The George Varley Award for Achievement in Forest Insect Ecology was presented to Prof. Manuela Branco.
The Forest Health Achievement Award was presented to Dr. Eckehard Brockerhoff. 
A new award, the Hartig-Patterson Award for Excellence in Forest Pathology was presented individually to two recipients, Prof. Mike Wingfield and Prof. Brenda Wingfield. 

The participants of the post-conference field tour travelled to Porto with stops to study Eucalyptus pests in central Portugal and to visit the arboretum (Mata do Buçaco) established in the 17th Century where damage caused by storms and the 2018 drought were observed.

This meeting was the largest in-person event to be hosted by Division 7 since the 2019 World Congress, and it was obvious that the delegates enjoyed the opportunity to interact with each other in person to discuss research ideas. The format of the joint meeting across the Pathology and Entomology Research Groups and Working Parties was highly successful, and the Division is planning to conduct a similar meeting in 2026.

Session on Pine Wilt Disease
After the November 2021 on-line meeting of Working Party 7.02.10 Pine wilt disease https://www.iufro.org/science/divisions/division-7/70000/70200/70210/, a dedicated session was included in the All-Division-7 Conference in Portugal, a country where the pine wood nematode has been spreading since its detection in 1999. A very significative participation was obtained with 14 oral presentations divided into 3 sub-sessions and 15 posters.

The session on Pine Wilt Disease (PWD) aimed to:

1. disseminate new findings on the invasive Pine Wood Nematode (PWN), its host trees, its insect vectors and other organisms potentially involved, and
2. promote interactions with colleagues outside the pine wilt disease community.

The 4th World Teak Conference with the theme "Global Teak Market; Challenges and Opportunities for Emerging Markets and Developing Economies" was successfully organized in Accra, Ghana from 5-8 September 2022, for the first time in an African country. The Conference was jointly organized by the Forestry Commission of Ghana, International Teak Information Network (TEAKNET), International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), Japan, the IUFRO Teakwood Working Party (WP 5.06.02), with the technical support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Rome. Around 273 registered delegates from 28 countries representing 5 continents attended the conference to share knowledge and experience and to exchange ideas on the multiple economic, social and environmental benefits that teak resources can provide. The participants represented government institutions, the private sector, universities, research institutes, and forestry student communities, international and non-governmental organizations. Previous editions of World Teak Conferences were held in Costa Rica 2011, Thailand 2013 and Ecuador 2015.

The main topics deliberated during the WTC 2022 included value addition and livelihood enhancement of smallholder teak plantations, promoting responsible teak trade and marketing, tree improvements, management and community forestry and family farming. It facilitated the transfer of knowledge and technology among teak growing countries.

The salient highlights of the summary communiqué for action are:

• Make available superior planting material to private companies and local communities to improve the planted teak forests.
• Facilitate capacity building for local community and field workers, particularly in teak management techniques and intercropping of teak with profitable agricultural crops.
• Establish confidence in teak investments with small holders and farmers through the provision of realistic cost-benefit analyses, market price information and enabling government policies.
• Encourage smallholder growers to apply better silvicultural techniques, to use intercropping systems in order to bridge the initial years without earnings from forestry, to organize group marketing and to make better use of marketing data and information.
• Investigate the opportunities of linking teak plantations with carbon credit markets.
• Commit more resources to research and development to advance the sustainable management of planted teak forests and investigate, in particular, the quality of teak wood.

On 8 September 2022, the participants joined field excursions to three locations; namely, the Kakum National Park and rainforest canopy walkway and Cape Coast castle, the Shai Hills Resources Reserve & Boat cruise, and the FORM Ghana Plantation at Kumasi that offered a better understanding of Ghana's natural environment and its commercial teak sector flourishing in the country.

The joint conference of Council on Forest Engineering (COFE), Symposium on Forest Mechanization (FORMEC) and IUFRO Division 3 was kindly hosted by Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, U.S.A., on October 4-7, 2022. The meeting, which was supported by BOKU, Vienna, Austria, brought together more than 150 enthusiasts in the field of forest engineering to foster knowledge exchange across the world.

A total of 121 contributions – both oral presentations and posters - from 24 different countries from all over the world were made for this unique in-person and online event. Additional student flash talks, a panel discussion on the future of forest operations and research, and a dedicated session for education added diversity and uniqueness to the comprehensive program. 

After two days of intensive program and discussion, the event ended with a field trip in the surroundings of Corvallis, Oregon, to see forest and harvest management in action. For the very first time, the FORMEC group left its roots behind and joined the COFE community on another continent under the flag of IUFRO.

"Connecting Knowledge and Minds", the 2nd IUFRO Division 3 Doctoral Student Conference, brought 15 PhD students to Oregon from around the world. Representing 9 countries in 4 continents (Africa, Europe, North America and South America), the students of Division 3 research disciplines shared knowledge, professionalism and friendship throughout the conference. 

This unique conference was designed for young and energetic students, where attendees had ample opportunity to present their research work, discuss a variety of forest operations and engineering topics and receive feedback from peers in a friendly and constructive atmosphere. Field trips to private forests and local logging businesses provided opportunities to learn about working forests and sustainable forest management in Oregon, while overnight stay in central Oregon and lots of social events helped students to build close relationships, understand different perspectives and engage other cultures.

The goal of the IUFRO Division 3 Doctoral Conference held on September 28 – October 3, 2022, at Oregon State University Peavy Forest Science Center, Corvallis, Oregon, U.S.A., was to foster global community and network among future research scientists in the Division 3 research fields.

Fir and pine forests are widely represented around the world and play important ecological, economic and social roles. There are several risks and opportunities to be addressed when managing these forests. Furthermore, climate change is expected to affect fir and pine forest dynamics (regeneration, growth, and mortality), requiring adaptive management strategies. The international IUFRO conference "Fir and pine management in a changing environment: risks and opportunities" was organized with the aim of reviewing past experiences and improving the management of fir and pine in a changing environment while recognizing the risks and opportunities for sustainable management of these types of forests.

Meeting
The conference in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on 19-22 September 2022, brought together 98 participants from Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Croatia, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden and Ukraine. It was kindly hosted and by the Faculty of Forestry, University of Sarajevo, and supported by IUFRO and the University of Sarajevo. The conference included a study tour to the protected landscape of Trebević where participants were accompanied by Prof. Dr. Sead Vojniković.

Topics
More than 60 scientific papers and posters were registered at the conference, presenting various problems in the field of fir and pine forest management. The following key issues were discussed:

• Stand dynamics of fir and pine forests: regeneration, growth, mortality, dendrochronology, and soil fertility
• Ecology and management of fir and pine species in a changeable environment
• Gene pool and provenances of fir and pine species: improving their adaptability to a changing environment
• Providing products and ecosystem services from fir and pine forests
• Silviculture and management planning given the pressure on wood requirements

Conclusions
The management of fir and pine nowadays represents a challenge for the silviculturists and forest managers bearing in mind that it is necessary to consider potential risks and opportunities for improving management practices. Science has provided useful guidance for the management of these coniferous species. More research needs to be pursued at regional and global levels to help address this challenge. Some of the actions suggested for adaptive management include the testing and use of more impact-resistant varieties of fir and pine, and silvicultural models aimed at minimizing vulnerability such as the use of mixtures, thinning, changes in rotation length.

Outlook
With this first joint conference of IUFRO WP 1.01.09 and 1.01.10, the organizers aimed to promote and advance research on fir and pine management in a changing environment. The organizers and participants agreed on the importance of continuing the research and communicating the scientific results, making them accessible for concrete application by the communities involved (e.g., researchers, managers, decision makers). A decision was taken on the organization of a new joint event tentatively in South Korea in 2025.

After the great success of the GREEN2014, GREEN2016 and GREEN2018 conferences and a break due to the pandemic, leading experts from all over the world gathered in Zagreb, Croatia, again from 14-16 September 2022 for the fourth International Scientific & Expert Conference "Natural resources, green technology and sustainable development- GREEN/4". The conference was jointly organized by the Croatian Forest Research Institute, Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at the University of Zagreb, Institute for Adriatic Crops and Karst Reclamation, Croatian Society of Biotechnology, Academy of Forestry Sciences, Croatian Chamber of Forestry and Wood Technology Engineers and "Zeleni prsten", a public institution of Zagreb County. It was supported by IUFRO (Divisions 5, 8 and 9), EFI (European Forest Institute) and EBTNA (European Biotechnology Thematic Network Association).

This year's conference gathered a total of 192 participants from Austria, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Great Britain, Spain, Greece, Lithuania, Finland, Romania, Georgia, Norway, Slovakia, Poland, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia.

The conference was opened with a plenary presentation titled "Strategic roadmap to assess forest vulnerability under air pollution and climate change" by Alessandra De Marco from ENEA, Italy. She presented the work that was outlined in the framework of IUFRO Research Group 8.04.00 Impacts of air pollution and climate change on forest ecosystems https://www.iufro.org/science/divisions/division-8/80000/80400/.

The five Conference sessions addressed the following topics:
Session A: Environment and climate change
Session B: Plan Extracts - Value-added products
Session C: Biomass for Bio-Based Industry
Session D: Green Technologies
Session E: Ecosystem management and modeling

Taking a multidisciplinary approach, presenters at the conference presented and shared the latest scientific achievements and offered possible answers to the challenges ahead, as well as illustrating new policies, showing innovative techniques and outlining the sustainability of the ecosystems.

Growth and yield modeling of fast-grown intensively managed forest plantations in Chile: A long term collaborative research effort

This webinar on September 27, which was kindly hosted by the University of British Columbia, Canada, was part of the 2022 webinar series "Forest Mensuration and Modelling Chats" initiated by IUFRO Research Group 4.01.00. The webinar series is meant to highlight forest mensuration and modelling research across a variety of research areas and allow for scientific exchange across the globe. A total of 56 participants tuned in from Italy, Sweden, Colombia, Canada, Taiwan, Philippines, South Africa, Myanmar, Costa Rica, Germany, Iran, United States, Chile, Nigeria, Honduras, South Africa, Nepal, Mexico, Pakistan, Greece, Malaysia, and South Sudan.

Dr. Guillermo Trincado, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Forest Science and Natural Resources at the Universidad Austral de Chile, provided an overview of the intensive forest management practices in Chile. He talked about the major plantation tree species, their management practices including planting, thinning and pruning. He stressed the importance of the use and linkages between Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Forest Inventory Systems (FIS), Growth and Yield Modeling Systems (GYMS), and Forest Planning Systems (FPS). He presented an overview of the National Simulation Model (MNS), its capabilities in modeling eucalyptus (EUCASIM) and pine plantations (INSIGNE), and the data used to build the available model equations.

Finally, some practical applications of the developed models for accounting for different establishment techniques and the effects of thinning and pruning interventions on stand growth and value recovery were presented.

The Training School was organized within the framework of the COST Action CA18207 "Biodiversity of Temperate Forest Taxa Orienting Management Sustainability by Unifying Perspectives" (Bottoms-Up https://www.bottoms-up.eu/en/) on 4-5 October 2022 in Grenoble, France, and gathered 30 participants from 13 countries. The Action challenge is to increase the degree of sustainability of European temperate forest management for overall ecosystem (multi-taxon) biodiversity. The Training School in Grenoble was the third of a set of Training Schools aimed at providing theoretical and practical tools for analyzing multi-taxon biodiversity data in forest ecosystems with an emphasis on bridging the gap between theory and practice.

These were the main discussion topics:

• Species distribution models (SDM): from theory to applications
• Analyzing species movement data and patterns
• Modelling multiple-species distribution using advanced statistical tools
• Open access R tools to analyze species distribution data

The Training School presented the state of the art of established and recent advanced tools to model species – environment relationships. The tools can be adapted to any species/taxon, being highly suitable for integrating multi-taxon studies on forest monitoring. The use of open-access R tools can effectively support the use of models to understand the species adaptation to a changing climate and evaluate the sustainability of forest management to allows resilient species community.

Future short-term missions and Training Schools will be organized by the Bottoms-Up COST Action to further support and create a synergy of local research efforts in a wider international perspective.

Forests and the forest-based industry in a volatile world.
What are appropriate response measures to address future and diverse demands on forests?

The IUFRO-Mondi Partnership held its 2nd Think Tank Meeting in Vienna, Austria, on 3 November 2022. More than 20 participants representing science, forest industry and policy followed the invitation to identify, discuss and articulate appropriate response measures at various levels.

After a warm welcome from Alexander Buck (IUFRO Executive Director) and Dirk Längin (Group Head of Fibre Sourcing at Mondi Group), Michael Kleine (IUFRO Deputy Executive Director) provided the basis for the discussion by presenting key challenges as formulated in the 1st Think Tank meeting (October 2021) and the 1st Stakeholder Dialogue (June 2022). He summarized major climate-related changes and evolving societal, economic and political frameworks which influence the provision of future diverse goods and services from forests.

An extremely lively discussion followed in four working groups and in the final plenary session. Possible response measures were identified for forest management, policy, industry and science in order to reconcile the different perspectives and diverse demands on forests.

Future central activities of the partnership will include the production of a comprehensive synthesis of existing scientific and technical information on the future supply of goods and services from European forests addressing, besides biological production, the whole range of relevant policy-related and socio-economic factors, and another stakeholder dialogue in summer 2023.

Third Meeting of the Global Forest Expert Panel on Forests and Human Health

As the preparation of a new GFEP assessment on Forests and Human Health advances toward its conclusion, the Expert Panel convened in Vienna, Austria, for a hybrid third and final meeting. The meeting was attended by 23 participants, including the GFEP team, to discuss the review comments, overlaps and gaps between the different chapters, and finalize any arising issues in the drafting process. The authors were also briefed on the upcoming steps in finalizing the assessment, including the editing process, as well as the communication plans before, during, and after the launch of the assessment report.

The GFEP assessment on Forests and Human Health will provide reliable and synthesized scientific information crucial to address the complex relationship between forests and human health in changing global conditions. It will present robust evidence required to efficiently utilize the synergies and achieve optimal trade-offs between human health and the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of forest ecosystems, their biodiversity (including wildlife), as well as trees in other land uses. The report and the accompanying policy brief will also present response options relevant to the policy context at various levels.

This study will contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by highlighting the nexus between SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 15: Life on Land, as well as relevant links to other SDGs. In this context, preliminary findings of the assessment were shared at the All-IUFRO Conference in September 2022 in Vienna and at the FLARE annual meeting in October 2022 in Rome:

The study outcomes are also planned to be shared at the upcoming United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP-27 in November 2022 and at the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP-15 in December 2022. Though I did experiment with computer science, training and business administration, I have always been captivated by moving images. So, I ended up doing science communications with an emphasis on audiovisual production. Needless to say, producing is all about networking: casting, locations, permissions, etc. That was mostly commercials and some music videos, until I felt that I was kind of missing something. So, moving to Germany to do a masters on International Media Studies at DW seemed to fit like a glove.

I should also say that I lived for two years in India. And that four hours of sitting in a cinema did not bother me. I spoke only a few words in Hindi but enjoyed it all the same. And it is probably worth mentioning that I come from Costa Rica.

So, as it happens, way before I handed in my thesis about media literacy and citizenship, I received a call. It was somebody from the European Forest Institute (EFI). Did I know anything about the science of forest then? No. Challenge accepted. And I am happy to say that I was brought up with a great environment consciousness. I started by improving the website for the Integrate Network. Then produced a short video about forest disturbances. Later I got to learn about anatomy, genetics, isotopes, DART TOFMS, NIRS, and more. And soon after, FOREST EUROPE appointed me to manage the communications of this pan-European process.

Short break here to point out that I did an internship at UNESCO's International Center for Technical and Vocational Education and Training. And yes, you guessed well, one of my goals was to strengthen the links to schools in Latin America. I thought it was fitting considering that I partly studied in one.

So finally, it seems that communications + networking + forest science has branched out of me. Pun intended. And then when I saw the opportunity to join IUFRO, it was no surprise that I was eager to apply. Keep tuned!

My name is Samuel Fajana, a final year student of forestry and wood technology at Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria. I am also an active member of the International Forestry Students' Association (IFSA) where I have served in the FUTA local chapter. This has offered me opportunities to build a broader network, develop activities to spark action for nature and also gain international exposure and views about forestry.

I recently completed a remote externship program on marine and community conservation hosted by Paragon One in collaboration with the National Geographic Society and The Nature Conservancy where I earned an outstanding completion certificate and also won a seed fund to kick start a conservation project in Araromi Seaside, Ondo State, Nigeria.

Also, I have broad experience in volunteering for NGOs and local conservation organizations in planning and strategizing campaigns and events to educate and sensitize the public on climate change impacts and sustainable actions.

My passion for climate policy, forest science and environmental sustainability fueled my application for an IUFRO internship for September and October 2022. The internship opportunity has helped me to obtain unique and versatile experience and improve my skills for later work engagement in my future career, broadened my network and also gave me a chance to gain an advance knowledge in forest science and policy. I am super grateful for this opportunity I received through IFSA and IUFRO, which has contributed immensely to my career growth.

"New concepts, same forests: The role of SFM and other forest-related concepts to solve competing interest and needs on forest ecosystem services"

In the attempt to address the increasing societal demand and policy concern for biodiversity-friendly and climate-resilient forest management, many forest-related concepts appeared in the last decade in the scientific literature and programmatic documents.

As the scientific knowledge is growing, EFI in partnership with USV (Romania) launched a study to understand how SFM is connoted to other forest-related concepts currently abundant in the political debate and scientific literature. The study is based on a literature review and is complemented by a survey to collect expert-based opinions on 17 different forest-related concepts (biodiversity safe-forestry, climate-smart forestry, retention forestry, continuous cover forestry, nature-based forestry, rewilding, etc.).

On the occasion of UNECE 75th anniversary, the Joint UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section is launching a photo contest in partnership with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) on the theme of "From woodland to woodwork: a photo contest to mark 75 years of UNECE's commitment to sustainable forest management". The contest is entirely on social media and is open to entrants of all skill levels.

Applications through the International Science Council process close 14 November 2022.

Frontiers Research Foundation has launched the Planet Prize to recognize and reward exceptional scientists. Three prizes worth a total of CHF 3 million (~USD $3.2m) will be awarded in 2023 to the world's most innovative sustainability scientists who are able to offer globally scalable solutions which protect and restore planetary health. All domains of science will be considered.
