This special issue published in Landscape Ecology is primarily composed of papers generated from two events: the biennial conference organized by the IUFRO 8.01.02 Working Party (Division 8): Forest Landscape Ecology - held in Concepcion, Chile during November, 2012; under the theme "Sustaining Forests and Humans in a Changing Landscape: Forest, Society, and Global Change". In addition, a Symposium organized for the Ecosummit in Columbus, Ohio USA, joining efforts from ELI, IALE and IUFRO communities;  under the  theme "Structure matters – The potential of land-use pattern to contribute to ecosystem services provision". The symposium was concerned with the pattern of ecosystems and land-types as it pertains to providing ecosystem services.
The papers in this Special Issue represent work conducted in eleven different countries, especially from South America, but also from USA and Europe.  We believe that these papers will create interest and inform management of some potential methods to evaluate ecosystem services at the landscape level with an integrative approach, offering new tools for management and conservation. In particular, we tried to  highlight different realities and tools developed or adapted from landscape ecology that are being increasingly used to assist with the quantification, modeling, mapping, and valuing of ecosystem services in different situation and geographical contexts. The ultimate aims is for readers to recognize the role of landscape ecology in the advancement of science and management, particularly within the context of emerging physical, sociocultural, economic, and political drivers of change which influence forest systems and the services they provide.

This book was based on the IUFRO Landscape Ecology Work Group International Conference that took place in Bragança, Portugal, in September 2010. It is an exploration of the state of knowledge of global changes in forested landscapes, with an emphasis on their causes and effects, and the challenges faced by researchers and land managers who must cope with these changes.

The following two books make significant contributions to the science and application of landscape ecology. Members of the Working Party edited the books:

• David J. Mladenoff is an Associate Professor in the Department of Forest Ecology and Management at the University of Wisconsin-Madison;
• Ajith H. Perera is a Research Scientist and leads the Forest Landscape Ecology Group at the Ontario Forest Research Institute.

Other Working Party members have contributed chapters to these books. In each case, excerpts are provided from the book's cover.

  The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance.
