What is IUFRO?
The acronym stands for International Union of Forest Research Organizations. IUFRO is a global scientific network for forest and trees related research cooperation established in 1892 as a non-profit, non-governmental organization.
The vision of IUFRO is to be "The Global Voice of Forest Science Promoting a Sustainable Future of Forests and Society". IUFRO aims to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations.
IUFRO's mission is to advance research excellence and knowledge sharing, and to foster the development of science-based solutions to forest-related challenges for the benefit of forests and people worldwide.

How can I benefit from support to attend IUFRO conferences and meetings?
The Special Programme for Development of Capacities (IUFRO-SPDC) operates the Scientist Assistance Program providing support to early or mid-career forest scientists from economically-disadvantaged regions to participate in the following two types of events:

Does IUFRO offer trainings and capacity development opportunities?
The Special Programme for Development of Capacities (IUFRO-SPDC) offers training and knowledge-sharing workshops which you can apply for. Slots in these workshops are provided on a first-come first-served basis. Find out what workshops are currently open for application here.
How can policy makers or forest advocates engage with IUFRO?
The Science-Policy Programme (SciPol) focuses on engaging policy makers and other stakeholders. Through this programme, we offer free available assessments, policy briefs and connection with scientific experts. We regularly participate in global policy processes and international events to enhance the impact of science in decision-making.
Is IUFRO handing out awards and how can they be received?
Yes, there are many Honours and Awards bestowed by IUFRO, we even have a special Honours and Awards Committee for that. The Committee also has a conflict of interest policy to ensure its integraty. You can find all information about our awards and the committee on our Honours and Awards page.
Application and nomination: You can nominate a candidate for our awards, please check our website regularly to see if nominations are open for an award. Self-nominations are unfortunately not possible. Please check the details and regulations in place for the individual honours and awards on the Honours and Awards webpage, informing also on who can nominate deserving individuals.
How can I make a donation to IUFRO?
We offer the possibility to make a general donation to IUFRO or choose a specific donation purpose. Contributions of all sizes are greatly appreciated. Several donation options are available that allow you to help meet specific IUFRO needs. IUFRO accepts donations both online and by wire transfer. You can make a donation here.

What benefits do I get if I join IUFRO as a member?
As an IUFRO member, you receive multiple exclusive benefits. Find out about them on our Become a Member page. We also provide some information on how to Collaborate in the network once you are a IUFRO member.
How much are the annual membership fees?
Membership fees are based on the country you reside in and depend on the type of membership (organizational membership or individual membership). You can find all our fees and types of membership on our Become a Member page.
Our fees vary for low-income and high-income countries. Find out where your country ranges on the World Bank List of Economies (January 2022).
I am only one person. How can I become a member and is there a special fee for just me?
If you are an individual you can register as so called "Associate Member". The annual fee is 66 Euro for low-income and lower middle-income economies, and 132 Euro for individuals residing in upper middle-income and high-income economies. Find out in which category your country falls from the World Bank List of Economies (January 2022).
If the organization you work for is a IUFRO member, you are also already a part of IUFRO.
I am an individual scientist. Where can I check whether my organization is already a member of IUFRO?
You can find all IUFRO Member Organizations here, please search for your organization to see if they are a member. If you are still unsure, please contact us and state the name of your organization.
I am a student, can I become a member of IUFRO?
If you are employed with your university in the field of forest research or forest-related research, if you are a PhD student in the field of forest research or forest-related research, or if you work freelance in the field of forest research or forest-related research alongside your studies you can become an associate member of IUFRO.
My organization is interested in becoming a member. How many researchers will become members through my organization?
Each organization pays a basic annual fee ranging from 328 EUR (low-income economies) to 819 EUR (high-income economies).
In addition, each Member Organization pays 164 EUR for every 10 researchers listed on the application form. Thus, the number of an organization’s researchers becoming members depends on the number of researchers listed and paid for by this member organization. Find an overview of our fees here.
How can I pay my membership fee and what forms of payment do you accept?
IUFRO accepts bank transfers or credit card payments (Visa or MasterCard) for the payment of membership fees. You can find our online payment form in your personal area. Log in to your account, go to "My IUFRO" in the left menu and access the "Membership payment" form.
How long will it take to process my membership?
We will contact you within a couple of days to provide you with payment details. You are eligible to register for an online user account for the members’ area and other benefits once we confirm the receipt of your membership fee.
How can I sign up for the electronic newsletter?
As a member you will automatically receive IUFRO’s monthly newsletter IUFRO News. As we send the newsletter to the email address(es) indicated in the application form, we ask you to contact us if you want us to send IUFRO News to a different email address.
How can I as a member submit information (e.g. news, events, publications) to IUFRO to be shared online and within the network?
We are creating a new feature for you to submit information through our online system! Until we have that ready for you, please send any information you would like to provide for the IUFRO website to office@iufro.org.
How can I participate in a Unit of my choice?
As a member you can contact the Coordinator of a unit and indicate your interest in the group and its work. The Coordinator will then provide you with further details. You can find the Coordinators of a unit through our search or by accessing the unit’s webpage under the menu item “Our Work”. Additionally, you can always contact us for support and guidance.
I would like to know more about the status of my membership request. Who can give me details?

How is networking carried out in IUFRO?
The IUFRO network provides an array of opportunities for voluntary cooperation. The network is open to all individuals and organizations dedicated to forest and forest products research and related disciplines. IUFRO is organized in 9 scientific Divisions, over 50 Research Groups, more than 180 Working Parties and 9 interdisciplinary Task Forces, as well as Special Programmes, Projects and IUFRO-led Initiatives. There are almost 800 voluntary coordinators of these units. A vast majority of networking is implemented in the form of its more than 70 meetings every year as well as an IUFRO World Congress that is held every 5 years. How is IUFRO financed?
IUFRO is a non-profit organization supported primarily by fees from our 700 Member Organizations. We receive additional funding through grants from a few institutions. Our Funding Partners include national governments, international organizations and institutions, private foundations and research agencies around the globe. A few additional partners support IUFRO on specific projects. Since our sources are limited, we appreciate Donations that can help us achieve our mission.
What is IUFRO's organizational structure?
IUFRO has three Main Bodies that have relevant key functions to enable and support the Union's work including execution, decision-making and facilitation: The IUFRO Board, the International Council (IC) and IUFRO Headquarters.
Science in IUFRO is facilitated through our Divisions and Task Forces that focus on a variety of topics. In addition, we have three Special Programmes and Projects that provide services that support science collaboration.
What are IUFRO Divisions and Task Forces?
IUFRO's field of scientific activity is spread over nine Divisions which cover key forest research fields. They support researchers in collaborative work and provide an organizational link among Research Groups and their associated Working Parties.
Task Forces are established on a temporary basis for inter-disciplinary cooperation in inter-divisional forest research fields. Their focus is on emerging key issues that are of strong interests to policy makers and groups inside and outside the forest sector.
What are IUFRO’s Special Programmes, Projects and IUFRO-led Initiatives?
In general, IUFRO’s Special Programmes, Projects and IUFRO-led Initiatives provide various services to the global forest science community and stakeholders including policy support, information management and capacity development. Currently, we have three main Special Programmes that support science collaboration in IUFRO: The Science-Policy Programme (SciPol), the Special Programme for Development of Capacities (SPDC), and World Forests, Society and Environment (WFSE). We also have some projects with partners.

We have a brand new Library on our IUFRO website. You can use the search field and filters to find exactly what you are looking for or you can simply scroll through our latest publications and other resources like podcasts and training materials to get inspired.
How can I find events that I are interesting and relevant for me?
Go to our Events section, here you have several options to find an event: You can use the search and filters to look for specific topics / dates / locations etc. Alternatively, you can look through the events that are listed with the latest event first. Use the "View As" function on the right bottom of the search bar to switch between grid, detail, list or calendar view.
Is there a way to mark information from the website that is interesting for me?
We added a new function for you to save and share information from the IUFRO website. You can find the "save" and "share" icons below all news, events and publication entries on our website.
Save: By clicking the "save" icon, the item will automatically be stored in your personal login area on the IUFRO website. Please note that you must be part of the IUFRO network to login and access this function.

How can I login to the IUFRO website?
You can only log in if you are a part of the IUFRO network. As a member or officeholder, you should have received your login credentials via mail, so please try searching your inbox for it. If you did not yet receive a login, please request to register here. If you are still having troubles accessing your account, please contact us. Our login area currently has a limited number of features, but we are building it up to include more benefits for you, so make sure to regularly check our website for more.
