Annual Report 2023

The 2023 Annual Report showcases the significant achievements and activities across our global network for forest science cooperation. The report is structured to highlight the contributions from various Divisions, Task Forces, Special Programmes, and projects organized under thematic clusters. Each section provides a detailed overview of selected initiatives and their impacts on forest research.

The IUFRO Divisions have made notable strides this year. For example, the All-Division 5 Forest Products Conference that took place in Cairns, Australia and focused on improving sustainable trade in timber and forestry, and cooperation between regional forestry and indigenous communities. Meanwhile, Division 8, Forest Environment, held a conference in Évora, Portugal, that dealt with the relationship between humans and nature to support multifunctional forested landscapes, including socio-ecological approaches, adaptive management and much more.

Our Task Forces have also been instrumental in addressing key issues. The Joint IUFRO-IFSA Task Force on Forest Education discussed the gaps in education at university and college levels in a symposium in Helsinki, Finland. Similarly, IUFRO Task Force on Resilient Planted Forests Serving Society and Bioeconomy greatly supported the International Congress on Planted Forests in Nairobi, Kenya. And other Task Forces offered a variety of webinars in their fields.

IUFRO Special Programme for Development of Capacities (IUFRO-SPDC) continued expanding the forest research capacity with different workshops and supporting event attendance and scientific visits through the Scientist Assistance Programme. Concurrently, the Science Policy Programme released the Forest and Human Health expert panel report.

Under the 2023 Annual Report thematic clusters, namely, health of forests, management of forests, societal benefits of forests and the future of forests, one can navigate a year full of network engagement.
