Biography

A IUFRO officeholder since 1993, John is the national program leader for international science issues for the Research and Development branch of the USDA Forest Service. He works with government agencies and external partners to support international efforts to strengthen forest science, biodiversity conservation and sustainable forest management worldwide. He previously worked as a scientist at the Forest Service’s International Institute of Tropical Forestry in Rio Piedras, PR, conducting research in Puerto Rico, Brazil and India on tropical silvics, forest restoration, and forest ecology. 

Prior to joining the Forest Service, he was a research scientist with the University of Puerto Rico’s Center for Energy and Environment Research from 1987-1991. 

John holds BA and BS degrees in Biology and Chemistry from Merrimack College in North Andover, MA (1980), an MSc degree in Ecology from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland (1981), and a PhD in tropical forest ecology and management from Yale University (1987).
