Woodam Chung is the Faye and Lucille Stewart Endowed Professor of Forest Operations at Oregon State University. Born in Seoul, Republic of Korea, his journey into forestry was inspired by his father, a forest scientist at the then Korea Forest Research Institute (now the National Institute of Forest Science). Woodam holds a B.S. and M.S. in Forestry from Seoul National University, and a Ph.D. in Forest Engineering from Oregon State University.
His first experience with IUFRO was at the 100th Anniversary Congress in Germany in 1992. This sparked a passion for international collaboration, leading him to serve as an international volunteer in Indonesia from 1995 to 1997. Woodam has since held various positions within IUFRO, including Division 3 Coordinator from 2014 to 2024. Since July 2024, Woodam holds the position of IUFRO Vice-President for Divisions.
With over 22 years of experience in academia, Woodam is a leading researcher and educator in forest engineering, forest operations, and forest management. His work integrates cutting-edge digital and precision technologies to enhance the sustainability, efficiency, and safety of forest operations. He has participated in over 50 national and international research projects and has over 140 research publications in his field.
Woodam is committed to fostering a culture of inclusion, collaboration, and innovation within IUFRO and the broader forest science community. He firmly believes in the power of collective knowledge and collaborative action to address the complex challenges facing forests and society worldwide.
