Biography

Mariella is a social anthropologist and Principal Social Scientist at Forest Research in the UK with over 20 years of experience in agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors. Mariella currently leads a number of interdisciplinary research programmes and projects related to the social dimensions of species management, tree and plant biosecurity, forest disturbances and climate change, stakeholder engagement and risk management and communication. Recent projects have covered the social dimensions of Phytophthora sp., Xylella fastidiosa,  Dothistroma needle blight, Asian longhorn beetle, Oak processionary moth, Acute Oak decline, Ash dieback, Emerald ash borer, and grey squirrels/deer.  

Mariella leads the Forest Research Tree Health and Biosecurity Programme and the forest disturbance theme in her social science group. She also established the IUFRO Working Party on the "Social Dimensions of Forest Health" and is currently coordinating the IUFRO Division 7 Forest Health Entomology Research Group. Mariella is an Honorary Fellow at the University of St Andrews.
