Policy Brief - Harnessing forests for the Sustainable Development Goals: Building synergies and mitigating trade-offs
Key Messages from this Policy Brief: Forests hold an important potential to contribute to achieving the SDGs
Strengthening the contributions requires focusing on goals and targets that improve:
- Participatory governance (decision and rulemaking)
- Administration, policy and regulatory framework and effective enforcement
- Accountability, transparent institutions like for instance tenure security and rights
- Access to markets and finance
- Education, skills and capacities
- Social capital and absence of conflict
The pursuit of some SDGs and targets can have negative impacts on forests and people. The SDGs that are likely to have negative impacts on forests include, for instance SDG 2 (Zero hunger), SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy), SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth), SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure).
